Everton have reportedly approached Paris Saint-Germain for 32-year-old midfielder Idrissa Gueye, who could make a return to Goodison Park.
Everton could be set to fix their midfield issues by re-signing former star Idrissa Gueye this summer. That is according to Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who has reported that the PSG man is one of the players Frank Lampard is looking to bring to Goodison Park in an attempt to bolster his midfield options.
After enduring a disappointing 2021/22 campaign, the Toffees have recently accelerated their activity in the market in recent days, completing the capture of Ruben Vinagre on a season-long loan deal from Sporting CP. At the same time, Everton have also reached a total agreement to sign Dwight McNeil from Burnley.
They are now focusing on adding a midfield option and have reverted to a familiar face in the form of Idrissa Gueye after suffering a major setback in their pursuit of Guido Rodrigues. The 32-year-old was on the books at Everton from 2016 to 2019, during which he made 108 appearances and scored four goals.
Gueye was a huge favourite among the Everton faithful thanks to his unrelenting work rate, industry, and composed presence in the middle of the park. The Senegalese international joined PSG for £30 million in the summer of 2019 and has won two Ligue 1 titles, making 111 outings for the French outfit.

The 32-year-old was instrumental in Les Parisiens’ march to the UEFA Champions League final in 2019/20. He was considerably less spectacular the following season, serving mostly as a utility player. Last season, though, was a solid one as he featured on a regular basis, making 33 appearances across all competitions.
But after three seasons with PSG, it appears the Senegalese midfield powerhouse could be on his way back to the Premier League amid Everton’s rumoured interest. Midfield is one of many areas where the Toffees are looking to add depth and quality, and Gueye is among a number of options on their wishlist.
Under new manager Christophe Galtier, PSG are ready to downsize their squad and remove players who have no future at Parc des Princes. Gueye is one of them, with PSG attempting to sell him as quickly as possible. At 32, the Senegalese international no longer has the legs to be as dominant as he used to be a couple of years ago when he was regarded as one of the best midfield destroyers in Europe.
But he still has a lot to offer and could do a job in Everton’s porous midfield, providing more steel and class from the centre of the park. Furthermore, Gueye will bring with him a wealth of experience, which the Toffees would benefit from, particularly as Lampard looks to rebuild the club following a disastrous 2021/22 campaign. As things stand, talks between Everton and PSG have taken place at a preliminary stage, but more discussions are set to follow in the next few days.
