PSG midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has reportedly turned down a move to Everton in favour of a transfer to AS Roma.

According to Calciomercato, PSG midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has rejected an approach from Everton to secure a transfer to Italian giants AS Roma.

Wijnaldum joined PSG from Everton’s arch-rivals Liverpool only last summer. After seeming close to joining Barcelona on a free transfer, the midfielder made a last-minute swerve to pen a contract with the French giants. However, the move to Ligue 1 proved to be a disastrous decision for the Dutchman, who struggled to get a look-in into the side.

After having failed to make the necessary impact, PSG, who are under new management now, have put Wijnaldum on the exit list, with several clubs, including Everton, showing an interest in the former Liverpool ace.

Everton are in the market for reinforcements in the centre of the park after bidding goodbye to Fabian Delph, who left as a free agent, while Donny van de Beek’s loan deal also ran out. With Andre Gomes and Dele Alli staring at uncertain futures at Goodison Park, Frank Lampard needs quality and experience in the middle of the park.

Signing Wijnaldum, despite his past allegiances with Liverpool, would have provided just that to Everton. However, as per the latest developments, the former Newcastle United midfielder has decided to snub the Blue half of Merseyside to secure a move to the Italian capital, where he will be playing for AS Roma.

Jose Mourinho has been on the lookout for a new midfield general despite adding Nemanja Matic in the summer. Wijnaldum has been on the radars of the UEFA Europa Conference League winners for a while now and a move is now believed to be imminent.

Roma’s owners have a good relationship with their PSG counterparts, which has aided the negotiations. As per the report, the Italians were considering a loan deal with an option to buy for €12 million, with half of Wijnaldum’s current €8 million salary being paid by the Ligue 1 champions.

However, there is a possibility that it might be a permanent transfer for a fee of less than €10 million as PSG are looking to get rid of Wijnaldum, who, for his part, is intent on working with Mourinho. As a result, the Dutchman has reportedly turned down Everton’s proposal and is now bound for Rome.
