Barcelona will reportedly provide stiff competition to Manchester United in the race to sign Denzel Dumfries, valued at €50 million by Inter Milan.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Denzel Dumfries has popped up on the radar of Barcelona over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Dutch defender is also a target for Manchester United, with Inter Milan demanding around €50 million for their star full-back.
Denzel Dumfries enjoyed a productive season after joining Inter Milan from PSV Eindhoven last summer. While the 26-year-old did not contribute as frequently as Achraf Hakimi, who he replaced last season, he chipped in with some important goals and assists in the 2021/22 campaign.
The Dutch defender has turned out 45 times thus far for Inter Milan, chipping in with five goals and seven assists. But with Inter Milan in a spot of bother on the financial front, the Nerazzurri might not stop a departure for Dumfries if a suitor shells out €50 million. Barcelona and Manchester United are keen on signing him.
The interest from Barcelona stems from the stumbling block that has recently emerged in the pursuit of Cesar Azpilicueta. The Blaugrana had seemingly been inching closer to securing the services of the Chelsea captain, only for Thomas Tuchel to suggest that he might block a move for the Spaniard.
Barcelona will thus have to identify alternatives for Azpilicueta, with Hector Bellerin, Dumfries, and Hugo Mallo emerging on their radar. But Barcelona will have to fend off stiff competition from Manchester United to secure the services of the 26-year-old Dutch international.
The Red Devils are keen on adding more quality to the right-back slot, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot not convincing Erik ten Hag enough. While Wan-Bissaka barely makes a mark in the final third, Dalot is suspect defensively. Dumfries has thus emerged as a viable target for Manchester United, with the English giants reportedly preparing an offer to sign him.
Manchester United should have the financial strength to shell out €50 million to sign Dumfries, but Barcelona might struggle to do so, despite activating the economic levers. The Red Devils are currently in the pole position to sign the Inter Milan defender. However, it will be interesting to see if Barcelona can usurp Manchester United in the race to sign the 26-year-old.
