Bayern Munich uninterested in signing Frenkie de Jong

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are reportedly not interested in securing the services of Frenkie de Jong, a target for Manchester United.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Bayern Munich will not launch the offensive to sign Frenkie de Jong in the summer transfer window. The Barcelona midfielder is the subject of interest from Manchester United, but he does not want to join the Red Devils.

Frenkie de Jong has been the fall guy for Barcelona to see things fall into place. While the economic levers are easing the financial burden on the Blaugrana, a few players need to leave to lighten the wage bill and enable the club to register the new players ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The Dutch midfielder is one of Barcelona’s highest-paid players and their most bankable asset. So the Catalan giants are keen on cashing in on de Jong in the summer transfer window amid interest from Manchester United and Chelsea. However, the 25-year-old’s preferred destination is Bayern Munich.

The problem for de Jong is that despite his preference, there is no spot in the midfield unit at the Allianz Arena. With Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich the undisputed first-choice midfield pairing for Bayern Munich, the Barcelona midfielder might have had to wage a battle to be a regular anyway.

In addition, the Bundesliga champions are prioritising signing Konrad Laimer from RB Leipzig. So there is barely any bandwidth for Bayern Munich to bring in another midfielder, leaving de Jong staring at an uncertain future, especially with Barcelona desperate to offload him this summer.

Selling the 25-year-old to Manchester United is Barcelona’s best route to get de Jong off the books. But a move to Manchester United is unlikely for de Jong, even though the Red Devils have agreed to a transfer with Barcelona for the Dutch midfielder.

Meanwhile, de Jong is also a target for Chelsea, and he is more receptive to joining the Blues. But the west Londoners are yet to pursue the Barcelona midfielder as seriously as Manchester United. For now, what remains certain is that de Jong will not join Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window.
