Atletico Madrid are reportedly keeping tabs on the situation of Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, although no bid is in the works at the moment.
According to ESPN, Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has popped up on the radars of La Liga giants Atletico Madrid, who are monitoring his situation at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo enjoyed a hero’s return to Manchester United last summer, as he secured a transfer back from Juventus and scored a brace on his second debut for the club. While the 37-year-old veteran enjoyed a solid campaign on a personal note, the same cannot be said about the Red Devils, who stuttered and stumbled to their worst-ever points tally in a Premier League season.
The lack of Champions League football next season and the slow start to the transfer window have led to Ronaldo seeking an exit from Manchester United this summer. The Portugal captain has informed the club of his desire to leave, with his agent Jorge Mendes already offering him around to big clubs across Europe.
However, as things stand, there don’t seem to be any takers for Ronaldo. The likes of PSG and Bayern Munich rejecting the chance to sign him, while Chelsea have also ended their pursuit of the Manchester United maverick after showing a shock interest in him.
Ronaldo has been offered a massive £2 million per week contract by an unnamed club from Saudi Arabia. However, the Portuguese international has rejected the proposal as he continues to look for a club where he can play Champions League football.
With uncertainty surrounding his future, Atletico Madrid have decided to keep tabs on Ronaldo’s current situation at Old Trafford. It is hard to imagine the 37-year-old joining Los Rojiblancos, considering his history with Real Madrid. Indeed, the 37-year-old is Los Blancos’ all-time leading goalscorer and a club legend and has had a bitter rivalry with Atleti for years now.
Despite that, Diego Simeone’s side are monitoring the developments surrounding Ronaldo, who has just one year left on his contract. Atletico Madrid lost Luis Suarez this summer and need someone to replace the Uruguayan, especially with Antoine Griezmann struggling and Alvaro Morata headed for the exit doors.
However, the report clarifies that Atletico Madrid are not currently planning to launch a move for Ronaldo. Even if that changes, a move does seem implausible given his rich history at Real Madrid. But then, stranger things have happened in the transfer market.
