La Liga champions Real Madrid reportedly have no interest in re-signing Tottenham full-back Sergio Reguilon amid interest from Sevilla.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Real Madrid will reportedly not enter the race to sign Sergio Reguilon in the summer transfer window. The reigning La Liga champions can re-sign the Tottenham full-back by exercising their buyback clause but have given Sevilla a free run at him.
Sergio Reguilon joined Tottenham from Real Madrid two years ago, arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following a superb 2019/20 campaign on loan at Sevilla. But the Spaniard has been unable to reproduce his heroics at the north London club, going in and out of the starting lineups as a result.
Reguilon has not convinced any of Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo or Antonio Conte that he is fit to be Tottenham’s first-choice option on the left flank. And as the 2021/22 season drew to a close, 25-year-old had fallen behind Ryan Sessegnon in the pecking order for left wing-backs.
Things have gone from bad to worse for Reguilon this summer, with Ivan Perisic arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, essentially relegating him to the status of third-choice left wing-back. And with Conte giving the green light to sell Reguilon, the former Real Madrid full-back will likely leave Tottenham.
Intermediaries offered Real Madrid the chance to re-sign the Spanish international. But the reigning La Liga champions have chosen not to exercise their buyback clause, as Carlo Ancelotti already has two left-backs at his disposal. And even though Ferland Mendy reportedly faces an uncertain future at the Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid will likely re-sign Fran Garcia instead of Reguilon as the Frenchman’s replacement.
Instead of rejoining Real Madrid, the Spaniard could return to Sevilla this summer, with the Andalusian club in advanced talks with Tottenham over a deal for the full-back. Los Nervionenses recently let Ludwig Augustinsson join Aston Villa, leaving a spot open in their left-back arsenal.
Reguilon, for his part, is keen on rejoining Sevilla this summer. So even though the Tottenham full-back will not move back to Real Madrid, he will return to La Liga by re-signing with the Andalusian club as he gets closer to the exit door at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following Conte’s snub for the pre-season tour.
