Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have reportedly passed on the opportunity to sign wantaway Manchester United talisman Cristiano Ronaldo.
According to ESPN, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have both rejected the chance to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United in the summer transfer window. The Portuguese international reportedly wants to depart from Old Trafford and is pushing for an exit ahead of the 2022/23 season.
Ronaldo made a sensational return to Manchester United last summer, signing a two-year contract with the Red Devils. His tally in his first season back with Manchester United was on par with what is expected of him, but he did receive criticism for hampering the team’s overall play.
The 37-year-old’s future at Old Trafford reportedly depended on the club’s UEFA Champions League qualification for the 2022/23 season. However, even though Manchester United failed to finish in the Premier League top four, Ronaldo was said to be keen on honouring his contract and was ready to show faith in new manager Erik ten Hag.
But Ronaldo reportedly grew frustrated with Manchester United’s inactivity in the transfer market so far as compared to the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool and promptly asked for an exit. His agent Jorge Mendes has been actively looking for Ronaldo’s next destination and reportedly approached Bayern Munich and PSG, along with Chelsea.
However, PSG do not think the Portuguese international would be the ‘right signing’ for them, and they would not be able to afford his wages with their current structure and the number of high-profile players on their roster. Bayern Munich have also previously passed on the opportunity to sign Ronaldo from Manchester United.
Chelsea had emerged as a potential destination but again, manager Thomas Tuchel is not sure if Ronaldo will fit into his system, especially after a target-man in Romelu Lukaku struggled under him last season. With the former Real Madrid talisman eager to play in the UEFA Champions League next season, it looks like he is getting short on options.
Meanwhile, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is prepared to have a dialogue with the wantaway star and has insisted that Ronaldo is not for sale. With PSG and Bayern Munich rejecting the offers to sign him, Ronaldo might end up staying at Manchester United after all.
