A move to Manchester United is reportedly unlikely for Frenkie de Jong, even though his future with Barcelona remains uncertain.
According to reputed German journalist Patrick Berger, Frenkie de Jong finds himself in a difficult situation at FC Barcelona during the summer transfer window. The Dutch midfielder is unlikely to join Manchester United but is also disappointed with the way the Catalan giants have treated him.
Frenkie de Jong has been a tremendous addition to the first-team squad at FC Barcelona, with the 25-year-old being one of the most reliable performers for the Blaugrana in the last three years. Yet, de Jong finds himself in a pickle at Camp Nou, with Barcelona ready to cash in on him despite the prospect of activating economic levers to ease their financial woes.
The Dutch international’s deferred wages are a problem for Barcelona, with de Jong dismayed by the club’s haggling over those delayed payments. Meanwhile, de Jong, who has made nearly 150 appearances thus far for Barcelona while chipping in with 12 goals and 17 assists, is a target for Manchester United in the ongoing summer transfer window.
Manchester United lost Paul Pogba as a free agent at the turn of the month, with the Frenchman recently returning to Juventus in a Bosman move. In addition, other playmakers like Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard have also left Manchester United, leaving Erik ten Hag deprived of creative talent heading into the 2022/23 season.
The Red Devils have thus set their sights on de Jong and are ready to make him one of their best-paid players. Some reports have also suggested that Manchester United and Barcelona have reached an agreement over a possible deal for the 25-year-old midfielder.
But de Jong is reportedly determined to remain at Camp Nou, even with Chelsea joining the race to sign him. And Patrick Berger has corroborated such claims, suggesting de Jong does not want to leave Barcelona to join Manchester United, even though he is unhappy with the way the Catalan giants have treated him.
