Premier League heavyweights Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made an approach over a possible move for 28-year-old Barcelona forward Memphis Depay.
According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Memphis Depay is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur over a possible move in the summer transfer window. Barcelona will demand €20 million or more to sell the Dutch forward, with Spurs submitting an enquiry for him.
Memphis Depay might feel that he is an undervalued asset at FC Barcelona after finishing his debut season as the Catalan club’s top scorer. While the 28-year-old was not consistent throughout the 2021/22 campaign, he still managed a return of 13 goals from 37 games across all competitions.
But Depay only signed a two-year contract when he arrived on a Bosman move last summer, meaning he has entered the final year of his deal with Barcelona. So the Blaugrana will prefer to cash in on him in the summer transfer window, especially as they continue to target Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski. And his next destination could be Tottenham.
According to SPORT, Spurs have submitted an enquiry to ask about Depay’s availability in the summer transfer window. And with Barcelona open to cashing in on the 28-year-old forward for a sum of €20 million or over, Tottenham might have a good chance of securing his services.
Discussions over Depay started during negotiations between Barcelona and Tottenham over a loan deal for Clement Lenglet, who recently agreed to personal terms with the north London club. But the interest from Spurs is surprising, considering they have bolstered their attack twice this year by signing Richarlison this summer and Dejan Kulusevski in January.
Even if Steven Bergwijn completes his proposed move to Ajax, there is no reason for Tottenham to delve into the market for an attacking reinforcement in the summer transfer window unless Lucas Moura also follows the Dutch international out of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Nonetheless, Depay seems to have become a target for Tottenham this summer. But Spurs could face an uphill task convincing the 28-year-old to leave Barcelona after his recent comments, which explicitly asserted that he wants to remain at Camp Nou beyond the summer transfer window.
