Newcastle United are reportedly showing significant interest in Everton prospect Anthony Gordon and could target him for a summer swoop.
According to a report from 90 min, Everton youngster Anthony Gordon has become the subject of interest for Newcastle United as Eddie Howe looks to strengthen their frontline.
Having already done some significant business this summer, bolstering in wide areas appears to be next on Eddie Howe’s agenda. In recent weeks, Newcastle United have been connected with a number of players, including the exciting French winger Moussa Diaby. The Bayer Leverkusen speedster lit up the Bundesliga last season and has put himself firmly in the shop window this summer.
However, the French international could cost an arm and a leg, but considering his potential and exploits, it may just be worthwhile. However, should that move not come to fruition, the Magpies could line up Everton’s Anthony Gordon and Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi as alternatives.
A product of the Everton academy, Gordon produced some solid displays during the 2021/22 campaign and was one of Everton’s top performers, providing a bright spark in an otherwise dire season. But he had been impressing for longer than that in the club’s ranks in the past seasons and has always been highly regarded for some time.
The English winger was utilised regularly by both Rafael Benitez and his replacement, Frank Lampard, making 40 appearances throughout the season. He managed four goals and three assists, with one of those goals being the crucial winner against Manchester United back in April.
But that was not the reason he became a huge hit amongst the Everton faithful; it was his sheer tenacity, aggressive pressing, and stead-fast mentality to graft under difficult circumstances that eventually helped Everton steer clear of relegation danger late on in the season.
The Everton hierarchy is keen to keep him, but their financial condition is so dire that if a lucrative offer comes their way, they might just have to accept it grudgingly. The energetic 21-year-old is attracting interest from Tottenham and Newcastle, who have now joined the growing list of suitors as well.
Last season, Gordon made appearances as a left-winger, a right-winger and an attacking midfielder, which could be a big boost for Howe. Signing a versatile player will allow the Newcastle boss to vary his setup and switch between systems as needed, giving him quality squad depth. His defensive work rate would fit Howe’s high-pressing system, and he also has quality on his right foot.

Newcastle have the financial muscle to be able to bring Everton to the table and tempt them into a sale this summer. That said, having already lost Richarlison to Tottenham and with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s future up in the air, it is unlikely that Everton would want to offload Gordon this summer. Not to mention, selling one of their own would enrage the club’s fanbase, creating a toxic atmosphere heading into the new season.
