Real Madrid are reportedly considering a surprise swoop for out-of-favour Paris Saint-Germain striker Mauro Icardi this summer.
According to Fichajes, Real Madrid are lining up a surprise swoop for Paris Saint-Germain striker Mauro Icardi, who is likely to be sold by the French champions this summer.
Icardi joined PSG from Inter Milan in 2019. Having initially joined on a season-long loan deal, the Argentine’s transfer was made permanent in 2020. However, he has since fallen down the pecking order of things at Parc des Princes, especially in the last season following the arrival of Lionel Messi on a Bosman transfer.
Icardi played just 24 Ligue 1 matches last season, starting only ten of those games, scoring four goals in the process. The 29-year-old is clearly out of favour at PSG despite the change in management and an exit is very much on the cards for the former Inter Milan captain in the ongoing transfer window.
A return to Italy has been touted, where newly-promoted Monza have shown an interest. But, as per Fichajes, Real Madrid are also keeping tabs on Icardi’s situation and may consider making a play for his signing as a backup for Karim Benzema.
Real Madrid have been in the market for a new attacking signing after missing out on Kylian Mbappe, who signed a new contract with PSG. Richarlison had been high on the transfer wishlist of manager Carlo Ancelotti, but the Brazilian has joined Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth £60 million.
With Richarlison no longer an option and the likes of Mariano Diaz and Luka Jovic set to leave, Real Madrid will need to sign a new striker to provide cover for Benzema. While there has been talk of keeping Borja Mayoral at the club, the Spaniard continues to be linked with an exit amid serious interest from La Liga clubs.
It has seemingly forced Real Madrid to look at options in the market, with Icardi emerging as one of the options. As per the report, the 29-year-old is keen on leaving PSG, and the French champions are also intent on parting ways with the striker. It is further stated that Icardi could cost lesser than €30 million, making him an economical option for Real Madrid.
However, considering the recent bitterness between the two clubs due to the Mbappe transfer saga, it will be interesting to see if they are willing to set things aside and negotiate a deal for Icardi. As things stand, though, the interest in Icardi from Real Madrid’s part is very much in the initial stages and they might decide to look at other alternatives.
