Leeds United join race to sign Harry Winks

Leeds United are reportedly ready to rival Everton in the race to sign Tottenham outcast Harry Winks this summer.

According to Liverpool Echo, Leeds United have emerged as the latest club to join the race to sign Harry Winks. The Tottenham midfielder has become an in-demand player in the market this summer after being deemed surplus to the requirements by Antonio Conte. Spurs are ready to offload the player for £20 million, which has put multiple clubs on alert.

Everton have already expressed the desire to sign Winks ahead of the new season as part of Frank Lampard’s plans to shore up his options in the middle of the park. The Tottenham midfielder was also offered to Scottish giants and UEFA Europa League finalists Rangers, but the player is likely to remain in England.

Lampard’s desire to sign Winks comes in the aftermath of a disastrous start to his spell at Goodison Park. With Everton narrowly surviving relegation, the Englishman is determined to add more quality to the team. Central midfield, in particular, has been identified as an area of weakness, especially following the departures of Fabian Delph and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

However, Everton are set to face stiff competition from Leeds United in the pursuit of Harry Winks. Much like the Toffees, the Whites had a disappointing end to the 2021/22 campaign and survived relegation narrowly. On top of their poor season, they are on the verge of losing Kalvin Phillips to Manchester City.

While the Yorkshire outfit have roped in Marc Roca from Bayern Munich, coach Jesse Marsch is looking to add more options in the middle of the park. The American tactician has targeted his fellow compatriot Tyler Adams, but Winks could be an interesting alternative to consider for Leeds given his experience in the Premier League.

There is no doubt the Tottenham midfielder has struggled to impose himself in the Premier League. But it was majorly due to lack of game-time, with the player falling behind Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur in the pecking order this past season.

The report suggests Tottenham are looking to cash in on Winks for a fee of around £20 million, but that figure could decrease as the time progresses. Having recently signed Yves Bissouma, Spurs are aware of their need to sanction the sale of Winks. And should they fail to attract suitors, it won’t be surprising to see Tottenham lower their valuation for the midfielder.

It should ultimately pave the way for Everton and Leeds United, along with other interested parties, to make a £20 million move for the Tottenham academy product, who will be keen on reviving his career next season.
