Newcastle United have reportedly approached Manchester United over the availability of Scott McTominay, who is an essential part of Erik ten Hag’s plans.
According to The Times, Newcastle United made contact with Manchester United about Scott McTominay. However, the Magpies’ approach was turned away by the Red Devils. The report adds that Erik Ten Hag sees the 25-year-old Scotland international as a big part of his plans moving forward, as he prepares for his first season in charge at Manchester United.
McTominay has spent his whole career at Old Trafford after progressing through the ranks from the club’s academy. Since his debut in 2017, he has made 170 appearances, chipping in with 16 goals and four assists in the process. The Scottish midfielder has established himself as a constant presence in Manchester United’s midfield, making over 30 Premier League appearances in each of the previous two seasons.
McTominay will now aim to impress new boss Erik ten Hag as we draw closer to the 2022/23 season, especially with Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard, and Juan Mata departing from Old Trafford. And, contrary to popular belief, McTominay’s career does not look to be in jeopardy following a string of disappointing performances at the end of last season.
The Times have now suggested that Manchester United will not entertain any offers for the Scotsman, with the report claiming that Newcastle United, along with another unnamed Premier League club, recently submitted enquiries about his availability.
Contracted at Old Trafford until the summer of 2025, McTominay himself is also keen to stay at Manchester United and become a vital cog under the tutelage of the former Ajax boss, who considers the midfielder a key member of his squad.
Newcastle United, meanwhile, have already made great strides with their summer business so far, with the additions of Nick Pope and Matt Targett. Sven Botman has recently followed suit to bolster the defensive unit. They are well stocked in the midfield area, with Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff, and Jonjo Shelvey all adding quality to that department.
But with the departure of Isaac Hayden to Norwich City earlier this month, the Magpies are short of out-and-out defensive options. Furthermore, fringe players like Jeff Hendrick and young Matty Longstaff are staring at an uncertain future at Newcastle United.
McTominay provides a physical presence and is commended by many for his defensive output, ability to disrupt play and to cover every blade of grass with his bundles of energy. Keeping the critics aside, there is an excellent midfielder in there, and the Manchester United man could suit Howe’s midfield-blockade pressing system at Newcastle.

That being said, the Tyneside outfit should probably realign their radars, as they already have a similar mould of player in their ranks in Sean Longstaff, who impressed towards the end of last season. And with Manchester United uninterested in selling McTominay, Newcastle will not be signing him anyway.
