Mariano Diaz asks to leave Real Madrid amid Getafe interest

Mariano Diaz has reportedly expressed his desire to leave Real Madrid this summer amid interest from La Liga rivals Getafe.

According to Fichajes, out-of-favour Real Madrid striker Mariano Diaz has asked to leave the Spanish capital club this summer amid interest from fellow La Liga outfit Getafe.

After leaving Real Madrid in the summer of 2017 for Olympique Lyon, Mariano Diaz returned to the Santiago Bernabeu a year later after enjoying a prolific campaign in France. The striker was handed the legendary No. 7 jersey upon his return after Cristiano Ronaldo had departed the club, albeit just for one season.

However, Mariano’s second stint at Real Madrid has largely seen him warm the benches and make sporadic appearances here and there. It was the case last season as well, as the 28-year-old played just 11 times across all competitions, scoring and assisting one goal apiece.

With Karim Benzema playing the best football of his career, it is impossible for Mariano to get a look-in into the side. So, Real Madrid are open to the prospect of offloading him this summer, along with Luka Jovic, as they plan to use Borja Mayoral and Juanmi Latasa as cover for Benzema for the upcoming campaign.

Mariano, though, had shown reluctance to leave and was planning on running his contract down at Real Madrid which expires in 2023. However, there has now been a change of stance from the player as he has decided to move on in search of regular game-time for the upcoming season.

Indeed, Mariano’s agent, David Aranda, confirmed that the centre-forward is ready to leave the reigning Spanish and European champions. And a move to fellow La Liga side Getafe could be on the cards for the 28-year-old.

The Azulones are in the market for a new striker to replace Enes Unal, who is expected to leave the club this summer and are looking at Mariano as an option in the summer. The Real Madrid ace is courting interest from another La Liga side in Sevilla as well. So, it will be interesting to see where he ends up, but, as things stand, an exit from the Santiago Bernabeu is certain for Mariano.
