Leeds United have reportedly joined Newcastle United in the race to sign RC Strasbourg defender Gerzino Nyamsi this summer.
According to GOAL France, Leeds United and Newcastle United are among the clubs pursuing the signing of RC Strasbourg defender Gerzino Nyamsi in the ongoing summer transfer window.
Nyamsi joined Strasbourg only last summer from Rennes and soon became a mainstay at the heart of the defence, finishing the campaign as one of the better-performing centre-backs in Ligue 1. He played 34 times in the league and even set up two goals.
Nyamsi’s performances have put him on the radars of several clubs across Europe. Napoli had shown an interest in January and are still keen on signing the 25-year-old. Now Newcastle United and Leeds United have also entered the fray to secure the services of the French defensive ace.
Newcastle United are poised to strengthen their backline with the imminent signing of top target Sven Botman. But, Eddie Howe could be in the market for another defensive signing this summer as Ciaran Clark and Federico Fernandez are likely to be moved on this summer while captain Jamaal Lascelles is also attracting interest from Fulham.
So, bolstering the centre-back department further could be a possibility for Newcastle United and Nyamsi has emerged as a possible target. However, the Magpies will need to stave off competition from Premier League rivals Leeds United.
After surviving the threat of relegation by the slimmest of margins, Leeds United are going gung-ho in the transfer market to avoid a repeat of last season. The Whites have already brought in Brenden Aaronson, Rasmus Kristensen and Marc Roca to bolster their ranks, but Jesse Marsch is far from done in the transfer market.
Considering the defensive woes that Leeds exhibited last season, a new centre-back partner for Liam Cooper could be signed to compete with Robin Koch and Diego Llorente. And Nyamsi has popped up as a target for Leeds, with the report claiming that the Yorkshire giants are studying the 25-year-old’s profile in detail as they weigh up a summer move.
Nyamsi has a contract with Strasbourg that runs until 2025. But the French club could be open to a sale if a sizeable offer comes along. Whether Newcastle United or Leeds United come up with a formal approach for the centre-back will be interesting to see.
