Steven Bergwijn poised to join Ajax in £21.5 million deal

Tottenham Hotspur attacker Steven Bergwijn is reportedly set to join Dutch giants Ajax in a £21.5 million move.

According to The Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn is set to return to the Netherlands by joining Ajax. The Eredivisie giants are poised to sign the 24-year-old in a £21.5 million deal from the north London heavyweights.

Bergwijn spent six years in the Ajax youth setup before joining PSV Eindhoven in 2011. After four years in age-group football with the Dutch club, the attacker was promoted to their first team in 2015 and went on to make 149 appearances across all competitions.

After scoring 27 goals and providing 33 assists in the league across three seasons, Tottenham signed him in a £27 million deal in 2020. However, Bergwijn has struggled to adapt to English football in two seasons, scoring just eight goals and providing ten assists in 83 matches for the club.

The Dutch international has not broken into the Tottenham starting XI, managing just 17 league starts across two seasons while playing on both flanks. Ajax have had a long-standing interest in the winger, with Tottenham willing to part ways if their demands are met.

The north London giants have slapped a £21.5 million price tag on the 24-year-old, which Ajax are reportedly ready to pay. Bergwijn is also keen to return to the Netherlands to resurrect his career after two sub-par seasons at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham were even plotting a player plus cash deal for Ajax winger Antony, with Bergwijn included as part of the move. However, the report by The Athletic does not mention any such deal, with the Dutch giants expected to pay an initial fee of £21.5 million.

Talks between the two clubs are still ongoing with some details yet to be finetuned, but there is confidence in both camps that the move will go through eventually. The report adds that Tottenham have also set sights on Manchester City attacker Gabriel Jesus, who is also on Arsenal’s radar. But the Gunners seem to be in pole position to land the Brazilian attacker.
