Son Heung-min on Real Madrid radar

La Liga champions Real Madrid have reportedly turned their attention towards 29-year-old Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min.

According to reputed Italian journalist Rudy Galetti, Son Heung-min is the subject of interest from Real Madrid over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The reigning La Liga champions are closely monitoring the 29-year-old forward at Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur.

Son Heung-min has transformed into a world-class forward since joining Real Madrid from Bayer Leverkusen in August 2015. The South Korean international had become the most expensive Asian player back then and has come leaps and bounds in the last seven years to establish himself as Spurs’ talisman.

The 29-year-old has added layers to his game since arriving at the north London club and he ended the 2021/22 season as the joint-winner of the Premier League Golden Boot, scoring 23 goals in 35 top-flight outings. Son’s progress at Tottenham has not gone unnoticed, with Real Madrid showing interest in him.

The interest from Real Madrid stems from the rising uncertainties surrounding the future of Marco Asensio. The Spanish international has one year remaining on his contract with Los Blancos and could depart from the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer transfer window.

Asensio has popped up on the radars of several European bigwigs, including Liverpool, and his exit will prompt Real Madrid to invest in a wide attacker, especially with Gareth Bale poised to officially leave as a free agent in less than a week. While Kylian Mbappe had been Real Madrid’s priority target for the summer transfer window, the Frenchman chose to stay at Paris Saint-Germain.

Son has thus emerged as a viable target for Real Madrid, with the 29-year-old’s versatility making him an attractive option for Los Blancos. The Spanish giants are currently closely monitoring Son’s progress at Tottenham, but a move might not materialise, considering the Premier League giants will likely put up stiff resistance.

Son also seems content at Tottenham, and despite Spurs’ links with Raphinha, the player will undoubtedly remain a pivotal figure for the Premier League bigwigs. But it will be interesting to see if Son’s head gets turned by Real Madrid’s interest.
