Newcastle United close in on Nick Pope capture

Nick Pope is set to return to the Premier League, with Newcastle United emerging as the likely destination.

According to Telegraph, Newcastle United are closing in on the capture of Nick Pope. The goalkeeper is determined to return to the Premier League following Burnley’s relegation this past season. Although the two clubs are yet to agree on a deal, Burnley are keen on offloading Pope, whose contract expires at the end of next season.

Newcastle United are expected to pay a fee of around £8-10 million for the services of Pope. The goalkeeper himself will be delighted to return to the top-flight, as he harbours the hope of becoming a part of the England squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

Pope is aware of the fact that his presence in the Premier League could be critical if he is to remain ahead of Sam Johnstone in the race. The West Brom star plays in the Championship himself, but he is closing in on a move to Crystal Palace this summer.

Hence, Pope’s move to Newcastle United could prove to be quite critical, as far as his personal goals are concerned. As for the club, the Englishman’s arrival at St James’ Park could spark a major overhaul in the goalkeeping department.

From a sporting perspective, Pope is being roped in to replace first-choice ‘keeper Martin Dubravka. At the age of 33, the Slovak is in the final phase of his career as well, so it is imperative that NUFC sign someone that can prove to be a long-term fix, in between the sticks.

The arrival of the Burnley man should also pave the way for Freddie Woodman to leave the club. The report indicates the goalkeeper is set to join Preston North End while third-choice keeper Karl Darlow is expected to find a new club as well, in search of regular game-time. He was notably linked to Manchester United, earlier this summer.

Although Pope himself is 30, he can still play at the highest level for at least five more years. He also offers vast experience in English football, having featured in almost 150 matches in the Premier League. For a fee of just £8-10 million, the English international could well turn out to be a bargain for the Magpies this summer.
