Tottenham handed boost in pursuit of Christian Eriksen

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly been handed a boost in their quest to re-sign Christian Eriksen this summer amid competition from Manchester United.

According to The Athletic, Antonio Conte is a big admirer of Christian Eriksen and wants Tottenham Hotspur to sign him this summer. The Danish international played under Conte at Inter Milan, and the Italian tactician was left impressed by the playmaker.

After missing over a year of football due to the cardiac arrest he suffered during Denmark’s UEFA Euro 2020 encounter against Finland, Eriksen returned to the Premier League with Brentford in January and took no time to set the ball rolling. He signed a six-month contract with the London club which expires this month.

Eriksen played 11 Premier League matches for Brentford, scoring once in a 4-1 hammering of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and provided four assists. With the 30-year-old set to become a free agent once again, potential suitors have started exploring the possibility of signing him, including Brentford and former club Tottenham.

Manchester United are also among interested parties and have reportedly approached the player with an offer. However, as per The Athletic, Eriksen prefers to stay in London, which leaves Brentford and Tottenham as the two potential destinations.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank met the 30-year-old for dinner on Tuesday to discuss a possible contract offer, with the report claiming the talk went well. However, Eriksen is yet to inform the club of his decision, leaving Tottenham with a shot at their former player.

Spurs are convinced they can offer the player a good deal, considering they have qualified for next season’s UEFA Champions League, something Manchester United and Brentford have not done. They are also actively looking to strengthen other positions and have already completed three signings this summer.

Ivan Perisic has arrived from Inter Milan in a free transfer, along with goalkeeper Fraser Froster from Southampton. Tottenham have also signed midfielder Yves Bissouma from Brighton in a deal worth around €29 million.

Tottenham are in the market for a left-sided centre-back but are yet to finalise a deal. Alessandro Bastoni, another Manchester United target, was said to be on their radar, but the player is reluctant to leave Italy.

Everton’s Richarlison is reportedly close to joining them, with Spurs currently discussing terms of the transfer with the Toffees. Middlesbrough’s 21-year-old right-back Djed Spence is another player who is being linked strongly with a move to the north London club. So Tottenham seem to be making all the right moves in the market, and Eriksen might join them soon.
