Barcelona in contract renewal talks with Memphis Depay

Barcelona might have to hand Memphis Depay a new contract, with talks between the two parties over a new three-year deal ramping up.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Barcelona will look to tie Memphis Depay to a new three-year contract if they do not receive any suitable bids for the 28-year-old forward in the summer transfer window. The Catalan giants do not want to lose Depay as a free agent next year.

Memphis Depay joined Barcelona in a Bosman move last summer after running down his contract with Lyon. And the Dutch international made a strong start to life at Camp Nou, scoring several crucial goals in the first few months of the 2021/22 campaign. But his form nosedived midway through the season, and his stock subsequently fell at FC Barcelona.

Barcelona’s January transfer business pushed Depay down the pecking order at Camp Nou, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ferran Torres usurping him. But the 28-year-old still ended the campaign as Barcelona’s top scorer with 13 goals from 37 games across all competitions.

However, Depay will enter the final year of his contract with Barcelona in two weeks, having signed a two-year contract last summer. The Dutchman is eager to remain at the Catalan club beyond the summer transfer window. But his future is not in his hands, with Barcelona reportedly ready to cash in on him.

While their financial troubles should ease up a bit after the “economic levers” get activated, Barcelona still cannot afford to lose players as free agents. With Depay set to enter the final year of his contract in July, the Blaugrana will be open to entertaining offers for the 28-year-old this summer.

Several clubs, particularly in the Premier League, are interested in signing Depay, with recent reports claiming that Barcelona might soon receive an offer from Newcastle United. But the Catalan giants are ready to hand Depay a new three-year contract if they do not get suitable bids for him.

Barcelona will soon ramp up contract talks with the 28-year-old, and they are determined to reach an agreement with the player quickly. With Depay ready to stay put at Camp Nou, talks might conclude swiftly, especially if the offers from suitors are not acceptable this summer. So Depay might soon pen a new contract running until June 30, 2025.
