Manchester United have reportedly stepped into the race to sign Robert Lewandowski and are ready to offer the Barcelona target a bumper deal.
According to a report by The Sun, Manchester United are ready to step in if Robert Lewandowski’s reported move to Barcelona does not materialise. The Poland international is all set to leave Bayern Munich after confirming that he won’t play for the Bavarian giants next season.
Lewandowski is set to bring an end to an eight-year association with Bayern where he has broken multiple goalscoring records and grown into one of the greatest goalscorers of his generation. In 374 matches for the club, he has scored a mind-blogging 344 goals, helping them win eight Bundesliga titles and a UEFA Champions League.
The 33-year-old was also named The Best FIFA Men’s Player of the Year for consecutive years in 2020 and 2021. He finished as the Bundesliga’s top-scorer in six seasons while representing the Bavarian giants with a high of 41 goals in the 2020/21 league season.
But the Polish striker is now set to leave the club even with a year remaining on his contract with Bayern. Barcelona have emerged as the favourites for his signature. The Catalan giants have reportedly agreed on personal terms with the forward but there is still a chance that the deal won’t go through.
Barcelona desperately need to sell some of their high-earners to register any new signings and thus Lewandowski’s pursuit could stall as a result, even though £20 million could be enough to land him. This is where Manchester United are planning to step in.
The Red Devils are monitoring the situation closely and could make a move akin to the one that got Cristiano Ronaldo to Old Trafford last season if Barcelona cannot sign Lewandowski. Manchester United are reportedly willing to offer a £400,000-a-week deal to the Poland international.
Manchester United are currently in the market for a centre-forward to replace Edinson Cavani. The report states that Lewandowski has some Manchester United fans in his family, which could play a part if the Red Devils come into play later on in the transfer saga. Chelsea are also keeping tabs on the Lewandowski situation as they could see Romelu Lukaku return to Inter Milan this summer.
