West Ham are facing competition from Everton, AS Roma and Newcastle United in the race to sign Jesse Lingard.
A recent report from Mirror has offered an update on the future of Jesse Lingard. The Manchester United star has recently confirmed his exit from Old Trafford, writing a heartfelt farewell message after leaving his boyhood club. Lingard is now looking forward to the next step in his career, and the playmaker has no shortage of suitors, it seems.
West Ham are believed to be the frontrunners in the race to sign Lingard, who is available as a free agent this summer. But the Hammers could face stiff competition from Premier League rivals Newcastle United and Everton. Gazzetta dello Sport suggests AS Roma are involved in the race well, with coach Jose Mourinho hoping for a reunion in the Italian capital.
Lingard enjoyed his most fruitful spell at Manchester United under Mourinho. During the 2017/18 campaign, in particular, the playmaker was involved in 14 goals in 33 league matches. Under the Portuguese tactician, Lingard helped Man United win the UEFA Europa League and finish second in the Premier League.
Mourinho is hoping to replicate that success by bringing him to Roma in the coming summer. The Giallorossi are facing competition from Everton and Newcastle United, with the both clubs keen on signing the Englishman as part of their ambitious projects.
Newcastle, in particular, are looking to upgrade their options in the creative department as they look to build a squad strong enough to compete for the European places. The Tyneside outfit have been heavily linked with a move for Hugo Ekitike and the potential addition of Lingard could go a long way in strengthening the club’s attacking game.
Everton, on the other hand, are determined to spend the cash wisely after narrowly surviving relegation. The Toffees believe Lingard could be an excellent investment as he is available on a free transfer. He could be an upgrade over Dele Alli, who is facing an uncertain future at the club following a disastrous short spell at Goodison Park.
West Ham, though, remain the undisputed favourite in the pursuit of Jesse Lingard. The player knows the club and David Moyes quite well, and had enjoyed the best spell of his career at the London Stadium. He will certainly relish the opportunity to rejoin the club and help the Hammers compete for the European places next season.
