Newcastle United are interested in bringing Nabil Fekir to England as the search for a new attacking midfielder continues.
According to the print edition of the Sunday Mirror, via The Boot Room, Newcastle United are keen on Nabil Fekir and could plot a move for the Frenchman in the window. The attacking midfielder could be tempted with a move to England, although he remains contracted until 2026, having penned new terms back in January.
Some would remember Nabil Fekir for reportedly failing a medical with Liverpool in 2018 and the club subsequently pulling out of a £53 million deal. After that, he joined Real Betis and has been a major success at the Spanish side.
Fekir did suffer a serious injury with the La Liga club, although his recovery since has been good and the Frenchman was fully fit in the previous season. Fekir made 47 appearances across all competitions, racking up ten goals and assists each in his most prolific campaign in Betis’ colours.
Despite signing a new four-year deal in January, Fekir is understood to harbour ambitions to play in England. And Newcastle United are the exploring the idea of signing the Frenchman, after having faced frustrations in their attempt to land him in January.
Eddie Howe has a big season ahead, as Newcastle United plan to break into the top-six. The manager is hoping for substantial funds from the board to strengthen the squad during the summer window, having done so considerably in January. They were interested in Fekir back in the winter but could not broker a deal.
Howe is looking to sign an attacking midfielder to complement his attacking lineup. Newcastle United are linked with Lucas Paqueta, as the manager wishes to raid Lyon once again after landing Bruno Guimaraes in January. The Brazilian has proved his worth at the French side and may be open to a big move.
The Magpies are now looking at Fekir, probably as an alternative to the Brazilian. However, the Frenchman is a key player at Betis and will need convincing before joining Newcastle United as he would be playing European football with the Spanish outfit.
Howe does have a progressive plan with him and could give a player of Fekir’s profile much importance next season. Moreover, the Frenchman could earn a lucrative new contract at Newcastle, which could bump his pay significantly from what he earns at Betis.
The 28-year-old has several years left at the top level and could be a shrewd signing for Newcastle United. Even though he only signed a new contract in January, Betis could be open to selling, although they may quote a high price for the Frenchman.
