Arsenal told to pay £20 million for Federico Dimarco

Arsenal will have to shell out £20 million if they wish to sign Federico Dimarco from Inter Milan in the summer.

According to The Sun, Inter Milan could demand a transfer fee of £20 million for left-back Federico Dimarco with Arsenal interested. Mikel Arteta is reportedly seeking a new full-back to cover for the injury-prone Kieran Tierney next season.

Arsenal are planning an elaborate transfer window, with Arteta keen on strengthening multiple positions. One of them is the left-back area, as the manager is keen to find quality cover for Kieran Tierney after the Scotsman missed his second consecutive end-of-season run.

Tierney has missed many crucial games at length in each of the three seasons he has played for Arsenal. Those problems are unlikely to be solved just yet, as the Scottish star could carry a similar risk in the new campaign. Despite that, the full-back is one of the first names in Arteta’s teamsheet, as he is a quality operator on the flank.

His qualities have attracted the interest of some big clubs from England and Spain. Tierney only signed a new deal at the start of last season and is prepared to snub interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona to stay put at the Emirates.

Hence, it is clear Arsenal are not looking for a replacement but merely a cover in the position. Arteta likes players who are versatile in nature, and that is why there have been heavy links to Aaron Hickey. The Bologna star can play on either flank and is equally good with both feet.

Since then, Arsenal have recently been linked with Federico Dimarco, the Inter Milan backup left-back. As a cover for Tierney, the move makes sense, but it is all the same from the player’s point of view. He could probably get a better pay package in England than his current terms at the San Siro.

Dimarco only started 19 games in 2021/22 and largely came off the bench when Inter needed another defender on the pitch. Simone Inzaghi trusts the player and with Ivan Perisic departing, a spot for a regular berth could open up for the Italian. However, he will still have to compete with Robin Gosens for a starting role, casting doubts over his future.

Dimarco signed a new contract in December 2021 and Inter are now asking for a reasonable sum of £20 million from suitors, namely Arsenal. The 24-year-old can play as a typical left-back or, further advanced, in a wing-back role, while he has also been used as a left-sided centre-back in a three-man defence.

Dimarco is comfortable with his surroundings at San Siro and considering he will be a backup even at Arsenal, he may think hard before deciding on his next move. He could be a solid signing for Arsenal and be an upgrade over Nuno Tavares, who somewhat underwhelmed this season. However, Hickey could be a more useful player under Arteta than the Italian due to his ability to play on either flank.
