There are very few strikers in the current market that reflect a value-for-money proposition. After finishing a personally satisfactory season with 14 goals in Ligue 1, Mohamed Bayo is one of them. The Guinean international also provided five assists, and his contributions helped Clermont Foot narrowly avoid relegation.
Bayo has come through different levels of the French league system, and he proved his prolific form in the second tier last year. The 23-year-old striker then managed an impressive 22 goals and has taken his form into Ligue 1.
His form attracted many clubs back in the January transfer window. Clermont Foot could have demanded a decent fee, but their decision to stick with the striker proved vital as they avoided relegation from Ligue 1. But they may not be able to hold on to Bayo in the summer, as many clubs circle for the striker’s signature.
West Ham United are one of the notable names eyeing the striker. David Moyes is desperately seeking a new forward to ease the burden on Michail Antonio. In Bayo, the West Ham boss may have found the perfect mix for a striker needed at the London Stadium. They initially wanted Eddie Nketiah, who could remain at Arsenal, thus losing an opportunity to sign an exciting player on a free transfer.
Bayo’s electric form in front of the goal should be the primary reason for the Hammers’ interest. His price tag, which could be under €12 million, would be the icing on the cake for Moyes to pursue the 23-year-old striker. The Londoners are running on a tight budget and may be tempted to consider such a financial opportunity.
The Hammers are also linked with other options, with Burnley forward Maxwel Cornet also emerging on their radar. The Ivorian could be allowed to join West Ham after a good first season with the Clarets, who unfortunately suffered relegation from the Premier League on the final day of the season.
There are also whispers about signing Giovanni Simeone from Hellas Verona. However, if a striker like Bayo becomes available, West Ham are likely to contest for the 23-year-old.
