Arsenal, Crystal Palace vying for Levi Colwill

Arsenal and Crystal Palace are reportedly among the clubs keen on signing Levi Colwill from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Goal, Levi Colwill is the subject of interest from Arsenal over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Gunners have submitted an enquiry to sign the 19-year-old defender from Chelsea, with Crystal Palace set to scout him in Huddersfield Town’s EFL Championship Promotion Play-offs final against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Levi Colwill is the latest prodigious prospect to emanate from the Chelsea academy, with his exploits helping him draw comparisons with the legendary John Terry. The teenage prodigy joined Chelsea as an eight-year-old in 2011 and has impressed with his defensive abilities and leadership qualities.

While Colwill is yet to establish a foothold in the first-team squad at Chelsea, he has been shining at Huddersfield Town since joining the club on loan last summer. The 19-year-old has turned out 31 times for the Terriers, playing an instrumental role in their run to the EFL Championship Promotion Play-offs final against Nottingham Forest. And the youngster’s exploits have alerted Arsenal and Crystal Palace, among others.

The interest from Arsenal comes in the wake of the rising uncertainties surrounding the future of William Saliba. While the Gunners are prepared to offer the young Frenchman a new contract, he recently suggested that he wants to remain at Marseille heading into the 2022/23 season.

Mikel Arteta recently insisted that Saliba is in his plans for the upcoming season, even though reports have claimed that the north Londoners are open to selling him. But if Saliba leaves, Arsenal will need to invest in a top-class centre-back, making Colwill a viable target. As for Crystal Palace, the interest in the Chelsea prodigy is somewhat surprising.

Patrick Vieira has seen Joachim Andersen and Marc Guehi forge a solid central defensive partnership since their respective arrivals last summer. But there is very little quality beyond the duo, making Colwill an option worth considering for Crystal Palace. But the Eagles and Arsenal are not the only clubs keen on signing the Chelsea prospect.

Southampton and Brighton & Hove Albion will scout the 19-year-old in the Promotion Play-offs final, with the youngster also a target for Leicester City. But with Chelsea desperately searching for multiple centre-backs in the market, Colwill might have the chance to establish a foothold in the first-team setup at Stamford Bridge.
