Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is keen to stay at Old Trafford following a turbulent season which fuelled rumours of a possible exit.
As per James Ducker of The Telegraph, Marcus Rashford is eager to stay with Manchester United and prove himself in front of new manager Erik ten Hag. The English forward had a tough 2021/22 season, where he failed to recapture his form from previous seasons and has been linked with an exit, with Bayern Munich among the clubs interested.
Following Manchester United’s derby defeat to Premier League champions Manchester City, Rashford was reported to be ‘weighing up his options’. Arsenal were reportedly ready to pay £45 million for his services. However, the forward is keen on leaving the uncertainties of the recently-concluded season behind and starting the new season afresh.
Rashford will reportedly undergo warm-weather training in the United States next month to get into his best shape ahead of the new season. The 24-year-old is determined to make his way into Ten Hag’s plans. He is expected to join the rest of his Manchester United teammates for the pre-season on June 27.
Rashford has also failed to make Gareth Southgate’s last two England squads, including the one for the upcoming UEFA Nation’s League encounters. The forward wants to be a part of the Three Lions squad for the FIFA World Cup later this year, but for that, he will need regular game-time and the chance to recapture his lost form.
Rashford missed the 2021/22 season’s initial two months and failed to regain his spot in the starting lineup. He made just 25 Premier League appearances this season, coming off the bench in 12 of them. The 24-year-old returned just four league goals, his worst tally since being promoted to the club’s first team in 2016.
Bayern Munich are said to be keeping tabs on Rashford, who still has two years left on his United contract. The Bavarians are in the market for a new forward amid question marks over the future of Robert Lewandowski. However, they might find it tough to lure the player to Germany, since he is determined to prove himself at Old Trafford.
The England international’s best season for Manchester United’s first team came in 2019/20 when he scored 17 league goals, and 22 across competitions. He followed it up with 21 goals in all competitions in 2020/21, which makes his no-show in the recently-concluded season all the more baffling.
But it wasn’t just Rashford who struggled. The Red Devils were far from their best this season and finished with their worst Premier League points tally, ending the league season in the sixth spot. The academy graduate will now be hoping to hit the heights of the past under new manager Ten Hag.
