Aston Villa are reportedly eyeing an ambitious summer swoop for in-demand Sevilla defender Diego Carlos.
Aston Villa have raised many eyebrows with their capture of French whizkid Boubacar Kamara this summer. As per The Athletic, they are now eyeing yet another ambitious move in the upcoming transfer window by targeting Brazilian defender Diego Carlos.
The Villans are attentive to opportunities to sign the 29-year-old Sevilla centre-back, who has been linked with a move away from Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium for quite some time now. Carlos was notably linked with a move to Newcastle United in January, but the move did not go through, with the Magpies settling for Dan Burn.
It remains to be seen whether Newcastle rekindle their interest in the combative Brazilian centre-back this summer. But Aston Villa are certainly keen on acquiring Carlos’s services as part of Steven Gerrard’s massive recruitment drive that has seen the club bring in the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Boubacar Kamara.
Gerrard is now looking to upgrade his ranks in the central defensive department by roping in Diego Carlos. It appears the Aston Villa manager is looking to offer some serious competition for first-choice duo Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings while finding an upgrade over Calum Chambers.
Carlos fits the bill well, as the Brazilian has years of experience at the highest level of football. The 29-year-old has featured in 136 competitive matches for Sevilla, helping the club achieve great success under the leadership of Julen Lopetegui. His partnership with Jules Kounde, in particular, has caught the eye, with the two helping Sevilla emerge as one of the best defensive sides in Spain.
Among the two, Kounde has attracted all the spotlight due to his technical prowess and age profile. The Frenchman is closing in on a move to Chelsea as well, as part of Thomas Tuchel’s large defensive rebuild.
Luring Carlos away from Sevilla, though, could still be a tricky task for a club like Aston Villa. The club from Birmingham might not be able to afford the Sevilla’s price tag for the 29-year-old, which is why they are looking for alternatives in the market.
The Villans are keeping their options open by tracking James Tarkowski, whose contract with Burnley is set to expire in the summer. The Englishman would represent a cost-effective option for Aston Villa in their quest to upgrade their ranks in central defence, although they are set to face stiff competition from fellow Premier League rivals Everton.
