Real Madrid considering Robert Lewandowski as Kylian Mbappe alternative

La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid are reportedly eyeing prolific Bayern Munich marksman Robert Lewandowski as an alternative to Kylian Mbappe.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Robert Lewandowski has popped up on the radar of Real Madrid again ahead of the summer transfer window. The Merengues are viewing the Bayern Munich striker as an alternative to Kylian Mbappe, following the Frenchman’s decision to stay put at Paris Saint-Germain.

The Kylian Mbappe saga ended sourly for Real Madrid, with the French international decided to extend his stay at Paris Saint-Germain instead of completing a move to the Santiago Bernabeu. After Mbappe came agonisingly close to joining Los Blancos last summer, widespread speculation suggested he would push to complete a belated transfer this year.

PSG had briefly lost hopes of retaining the services of Mbappe beyond the summer transfer window before the player dropped the bombshell this past weekend. Real Madrid will thus have to quickly turn their attention towards an alternative, with Robert Lewandowski emerging as a candidate.

The 33-year-old has been on Real Madrid’s radar for years, but a move has never materialised. Lewandowski currently finds himself in a situation similar to Mbappe’s last year, with his contract having just one year left to run out and the Polish striker being eager to embark on a new adventure.

But widespread reports have suggested that Lewandowski is pushing to join Real Madrid’s arch-rival Barcelona, who recently submitted a bid to land him. So Real Madrid’s emergence in the race to sign the Bayern Munich striker should make things spicy in this transfer saga.

However, the interest from Real Madrid is surprising, considering Karim Benzema, who is as old as the Bayern Munich striker, is arguably the best player in the world at the moment. So it is hard to see how Real Madrid will fit Lewandowski in their first-team setup if they launch the offensive for him.

Lewandowski, like Benzema, has been in the form of his life for a few years and ended the 2021/22 campaign with 50 goals and seven assists in 46 appearances across all competitions. It will be interesting to see if he becomes a priority target for Real Madrid following Mbappe’s decision to remain at PSG.
