Barcelona are reportedly not ruling out the possibility of selling defender Eric Garcia just a year after signing him on a Bosman transfer.
According to Fichajes, Barcelona are open to the possibility of offloading Eric Garcia in the upcoming summer transfer window, only a year after having secured his services from Manchester City.
A former La Masia trainee, Eric Garcia left Barcelona for Manchester City in 2017 and rose through the ranks at the English club. While he got his big break at the Etihad under Pep Guardiola, the Spaniard was far from a regular starter and, as a result, decided to leave the Cityzens and return to his roots last summer.
Indeed, Garcia came back to Barcelona, joining the club on a free transfer after running down his contract with Manchester City. However, the 21-year-old has endured a difficult debut season in Catalonia. While there have been some top-notch displays, the Spanish international has also shown an erroneous side to his game, which has hurt Barcelona on occasions.
As a result, there are growing concerns that Garcia might not be able to perform at the desired level for Barcelona. Furthermore, the Catalan giants are set to reinforce their backline in the upcoming transfer window.
Barcelona have already secured the signing of Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen, who is expected to arrive at Camp Nou on a Bosman deal in the summer, much like Garcia did last year. In addition to the Danish international, the Blaugrana want to bring in another defender, with links to Kalidou Koulibaly and Jules Kounde persisting.
In a scenario where Barcelona can pull off the deal, Garcia’s prospects of flourishing at Camp Nou could take a hit. The Spaniard would fall behind Ronald Araujo, Gerard Pique, Christensen and the other centre-half that the Catalan heavyweights wish to add. It would leave the Spanish international in a delicate position at Barcelona.
The report adds that if things pan out that way, Barcelona would not be averse to the idea of selling Garcia in the summer. The Catalans are, after all, going through a bit of a financial crisis, and the club can use any money that comes their way.
It could lead to Barcelona deciding to cash in on Garcia, although it is unlikely that the Blaugrana would take such a step. Instead, the club could offload Samuel Umtiti and Clement Lenglet, with the latter emerging as a loan target for Tottenham Hotspur.
