Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa are reportedly interested in bringing Roma playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan back to England.
Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla has reported that Premier League clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa are showing interest in AS Roma playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan. However, the two English sides are facing competition for the 33-year-old’s signature, with Inter Milan and Napoli monitoring his situation as well.
Mkhitaryan’s contract with Roma runs down at the end of this season, and he will be free to join any other club on a Bosman move. The Giallorossi, as per Pedulla, want to renew the former Arsenal and Manchester United playmaker’s contract, but there have been no concrete developments in that regard.
Roma still have two matches left to play this season: their last 2021/22 Serie A encounter against Torino, followed by the UEFA Europa Conference League final against Feyenoord. The Italian giants are then expected to turn their attention towards the upcoming summer transfer window, with Mkhitaryan’s renewal one of the many things on their agenda.
The former Armenian international first joined Roma on a year-long loan from Arsenal in 2019 and notched up nine goals and five assists, following which the move was made permanent. Mkhitaryan continued to provide the goods, registering 15 goals and 13 assists in the 2020/21 season.
Even with the arrival of Jose Mourinho, under whom Mkhitaryan struggled at Manchester United, the 33-year-old playmaker has shown decent form, adding five goals and six assists to his record in the Serie A. With his contract inching towards expiration, interested parties have begun circling around.
While Inter Milan and Napoli wish to keep the 33-year-old in Italy, Tottenham and Aston Villa are interested in bringing him back to England. The former Borussia Dortmund star did not have the best of times in the Premier League as he struggled to settle down, first at Manchester United and then at Arsenal.
However, in Italy, the story has been completely different, and with Mkhitaryan entering the twilight of his career, staying put in the Serie A could be the logical decision. But it will be interesting to see if Tottenham or Aston Villa can land the 33-year-old this term. Spurs and Villa could have an alternative in Christian Eriksen if a move for Mkhitaryan does not materialise.
