Fulham enter race to sign Tom Lawrence

Fulham are reportedly interested in signing Tom Lawrence in the summer transfer window following Derby County’s relegation from the EFL Championship.

According to the Daily Mail, Fulham are among the clubs interested in making a move for Derby County captain Tom Lawrence in the summer after the Rams were relegated from the EFL Championship.

Lawrence came through the youth ranks at Manchester United but was unable to get a foothold into the first team at Old Trafford. The attacking midfielder departed the Red Devils in 2014 to join Leicester City. During his time with the Foxes, he had loan spells away at Rotherham United, Blackburn Rovers, Cardiff City and Ipswich Town before he signed for Derby County in 2017.

Since joining the Rams, Lawrence has been a regular in the starting XI and has made 187 appearances for the club, bagging 37 goals and 25 assists in the process. Captaining the team under Wayne Rooney in the 2021/22 campaign, the 28-year-old Welsh international had a decent season, bagging 11 goals and five assists from 39 matches.

However, Lawrence could not prevent Derby County from getting relegated from the Championship. With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, the 28-year-old is now attracting interest from clubs in the Premier League.

Newly-promoted club Fulham are among the suitors of Lawrence as they look to strengthen their roster ahead of their return to the top flight. The Cottagers have enjoyed a brilliant campaign under Marco Silva in the Championship and have been the top-scoring side in the competition.

However, their output could be hampered next season as Fabio Carvalho is set to sign for Liverpool imminently. In addition to that, top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic does not boast the best record in the Premier League. So, attacking reinforcements are a necessity for Silva and Fulham before the upcoming campaign.

Lawrence, to that end, can be a viable signing due to his vast experience and potential availability on a Bosman deal. The 28-year-old is capable of playing anywhere in the attacking third of the pitch and would provide the manager with added flexibility with regard to his team selection.

However, Fulham will have to face competition from fellow promotion-winners AFC Bournemouth, while Watford, Norwich City and Burnley are also interested in the 28-year-old Welshman. Furthermore, Leeds United and Everton are also believed to be holding an interest in the versatile winger. So, it will be interesting to see if Fulham can clinch his signing this summer or miss out on the chance.
