Newcastle United are considering a move for Giovanni Simeone in the summer, as he could be a cheaper alternative to some high-profile targets.
According to Corriere di Verona, as relayed by Sport Witness, Newcastle United are pondering over the possibility of making a summer move for Giovanni Simeone, who may be available at a much cheaper price, compared to some of the high profile targets the Magpies are chasing. His current club could sell him for profit in the window, and the striker could be open to a move away from Italy.
Giovanni Simeone has been working hard and putting in impressive performances away from the limelight. The razor-sharp focus of the media in Italy and the rest of the continent on Serie A’s top sides casts a shadow on clubs like Hellas Verona, where the 26-year-old is a consistent goalscorer.
In fact, Simeone has scored more goals than the €100 million-rated Victor Osimhen in Serie A this season. He is looking for a good move away from Italy, and his wish could come true in the summer. He currently remains on loan with Hellas Verona from Cagliari until the end of the campaign, but the club are set to exercise their buy option set at €10.5 million.
Verona could then consider keeping him at the club or selling him for profit in the summer. The report insists if the decision is to let him leave, the price range could be around €20-25 million. Simeone continues to attract interest from reputed names such as Napoli, although his desire is to play abroad, so a move to Naples may not be possible.
West Ham United were seemingly interested in Simeone during the January window. While there’s no evidence of the Hammers coming back for him despite their glaring need for a new striker, it seems like Newcastle United could be lining up a move for the Argentine.
The report stresses that Simeone could be a cheaper alternative to some expensive players linked with the Magpies. For instance, they are reportedly preparing a €70 million move for Darwin Nunez, while the 26-year-old Simeone could be available for just €20-25 million.
Recently Eddie Howe mentioned Newcastle United may have to play by the Financial Fair Play rules, which might prevent them from spending heavily in the next window. Moreover, the Magpies are waiting on fresh commercial partnerships which will boost their revenue streams. Hence the need to spend conservatively.
The idea that Newcastle could sign Simeone or Chelsea loanee Armando Broja somewhat stems from the FFP talks. Realistically, Simeone might fit into the system at Newcastle United, although signing him from Serie A could pose a risk.
