Premier League giants Manchester United are considering a Bosman move for AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli.
As per a Calciomercato report, Manchester United are prepared to focus on cheaper deals this summer. They have failed to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League and will thus have a heavily reduced transfer budget in the upcoming transfer window. In this quest, they have identified 27-year-old AC Milan centre-back Alessio Romagnoli as a possible signing.
The Premier League giants have had a disappointing season and are set to finish outside the top four in the league table. Destined to not play Champions League football next season, Manchester United may find it hard to attract top targets and are thus focussing on Bosman moves as per the report by Calciomercato.
Romagnoli has emerged as a potential target as the Milan centre-back’s contract with the Serie A side is set to expire this summer. But Manchester United are not the only club in the market for the 27-year-old Italian international, with Barcelona, Newcastle United and Real Madrid also showing interest in him.
Romagnoli has been associated with the Rossoneri since the 2015/16 season and has made 246 appearances for them. His contract with AC Milan runs down this summer, and he will be free to join any club on a Bosman deal.
Romagnoli has had an injury-affected season with COVID-19 further limiting his appearances. The AC Milan captain has thus fallen down the pecking order and looks set to depart from San Siro this summer, and Manchester United have emerged as a potential destination.
Raphael Varane’s £34 million move from Real Madrid last summer was supposed to solve much of the Red Devils’ defensive woes. But captain Harry Maguire suffered a massive dip in form as Varane struggled with fitness issues, resulting in a horrible season for Manchester United. As a result, they have made signing another centre-back their priority.
Romagnoli is not the only free signing in Manchester United’s plans with the likes of Paulo Dybala, Corentin Tolisso, Christian Eriksen and Boubacar Kamara also on their transfer wishlist. It remains to be seen which of these players the Red Devils manage to sign this summer as they prepare to enter a new era under Erik ten Hag.
