Premier League giants Liverpool are planning to renew Joe Gomez’s existing contract with the club.
Liverpool Echo reports that Premier League bigwigs Liverpool want to offer defender Joe Gomez a new contract as they plan to tie him down to a longer deal. The England international will have two years remaining on his contract with the Reds at the end of the season and there have been speculations about his future at Anfield.
Having joined Liverpool from Charlton in 2015, Gomez became an integral part of the squad by the 2017/18 season but injuries hindered his development. An ankle surgery in 2018 cut down his game time considerably the following season.
While the 24-year-old fought his way back into Jurgen Klopp’s plans in the Reds’ Premier League-winning 2019/20 season, more injury problems pushed him down the pecking order. He has been sporadically used this season, making 20 appearances across competitions for the club, with Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate ahead of him in the preference list.
The reduced game time this season fuelled rumours of a possible summer exit for Gomez. Aston Villa were interested in taking him on loan this January, but the move didn’t materialize. Steven Gerrard’s side have returned to the market for the centre-back’s signature but aren’t the only ones being linked with him.
Newcastle United are also said to be interested in the defender as they prepare to enter a new era under Eddie Howe with new owners in charge. Fulham, who have gained promotion to the Premier League for next season, are also keeping tabs on the £23 million-rated Gomez.
The 24-year-old also wishes to be a part of Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming World Cup but will need regular game time to make his case. It doesn’t seem that Gomez will get enough game-time at Liverpool, which has taken a drastic hit since Konate’s arrival last summer.
Despite that, Liverpool have reportedly asked Julian Ward to tie down the England international to a longer contract. Gomez’s contract renewal could lead to the permanent departure of Nat Phillips, who is currently on loan at Bournemouth. As for Gomez, it remains to be seen if he is willing to sign a new contract at Anfield or decides try his luck elsewhere.
