Saudi-backed Newcastle United are set to offer a new contract to Paul Dummett ahead of the 2022 summer transfer window.
According to The Sun, Newcastle United are set to make a new contract offer to Paul Dummett as the 2021/22 campaign draws to a close.
Having come through the ranks at Newcastle, Dummett is a Magpies man through and through. Despite a new era dawning at St James Park, the club favourite appears set to have a role to play in the restructuring. Eddie Howe has a good opinion of the veteran and is keen to have him on for the future.
The 30-year-old is a seasoned campaigner who has plenty of Premier League experience to his name. A left-back, he is also capable of playing at centre-back. Dummett has made over 200 appearances for Newcastle over the years but has not featured regularly in the past couple of seasons due to injuries.
Indeed, Dummett has endured a difficult campaign where he has been limited to just three games all season thanks to injuries. Given the interest the club and Howe have in retaining his services, the 30-year-old could be set for a big role next season. As things stand, he looks set to accept the contract offer and see out the next few years at St James Park.
Experience appears to be the name of the game in the full-back positions at Newcastle United. With Kieran Trippier holding the fort at the other flank, they are now looking to sign left-back Matt Targett on a permanent deal and secure Dummett’s future beyond the end of the season. This should help them in holding fort and building upon their good form of late.
With new money comes new expectations, and the club will look to bring in players of a better quality in the transfer windows to come. But, a player like Dummett can offer plenty to the table with his experience and workhorse-like attitude.
Howe believes he can still do a job and it does seem the right way to move forward as the manager is prepared to give the player a chance after his injury ordeals. It is now up to Dummett to make the most of this opportunity and establish himself as a regular for Newcastle again.
