Manchester United fail in attempt to sign Karim Adeyemi

Manchester United have reportedly failed with an attempt to hijack Borussia Dortmund’s deal to sign Red Bull Salzburg striker Karim Adeyemi.

According to Sport1 journalist Patrick Berger, Manchester United have suffered a failure in their attempt to beat Borussia Dortmund to the signing of Karim Adeyemi from Red Bull Salzburg.

Adeyemi has become one of the most sought-after young forwards in Europe after enjoying a productive 2021/22 campaign. The 20-year-old has plundered 21 goals and seven assists from 40 games in all competitions this season, ensuring that Salzburg have not felt the absence of Patson Daka, who left for Leicester City last summer.

Adeyemi has also made his breakthrough into the German national team after winning the Under-21 European Championship last year. He has scored one goal in three appearances for Die Mannschaft and has established himself as one of the brightest young forwards in the game in Europe.

Naturally, Adeyemi has attracted a lot of interest from top clubs across Europe, with Real Madrid and Barcelona keeping tabs on the 20-year-old. Liverpool, too, have been linked with a move for the German international. But for the longest time, it has been reported that the striker will be heading to Borussia Dortmund.

The Bundesliga giants are on the lookout for a new striker to replace Erling Haaland, who will likely arrive at Manchester City in the summer. And Dortmund have narrowed in on Adeyemi as the ideal target to fill in the shoes that will be left vacant by the Norwegian international’s impending departure.

But, as per the report from Sport1, Manchester United made a late swoop to hijack Dortmund’s deal for Adeyemi. The Red Devils are in the market for attacking reinforcements as they prepare for the departure of several forwards this summer.

Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata will be leaving Manchester United at the end of the season when their contracts expire. Anthony Martial is unlikely to have a future at Old Trafford once he returns from his loan spell from Sevilla. With question marks lingering over the future of Cristiano Ronaldo as well, a new forward is a necessary signing for Manchester United.

There have been links with Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez, while Manchester United have also been credited with an interest in Napoli star Victor Osimhen. Now it has emerged that the Red Devils had Adeyemi on their radar too and made an attempt to swoop him away from the clutches of Borussia Dortmund.

The report states that Manchester United presented Adeyemi with a lucrative contract worth £150,000 per week. But the German striker rejected it as he wishes to sign for Dortmund and will pen a five-year deal with the German giants. It remains to be seen who the 20-time English champions decide to pursue.
