Real Madrid considering handing contract extension to Marcelo

La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid are reportedly weighing up the prospect of handing a new contract to Marcelo after winning the La Liga title.

According to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Marcelo could stay put at Real Madrid beyond the summer transfer window. The Merengues are considering handing their club captain a new contract which will extend his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu until the end of the 2022/23 season.

Marcelo joined Real Madrid from boyhood club Fluminense as a prodigious 18-year-old in January 2007. The Brazilian full-back arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu as a potential long-term successor to legendary defender Roberto Carlos. But after spending over a decade and a half at Real Madrid, the 33-year-old will leave a better legacy than his iconic compatriot.

Marcelo has made 545 appearances for Real Madrid, amassing 38 goals and 103 assists. And after Real Madrid reclaimed the La Liga title from Atletico Madrid this past weekend, the veteran Brazilian defender became Los Blancos’ most successful player ever, having won 24 trophies with them.

But despite the highs of the title-winning celebrations with Real Madrid, Marcelo’s future remains up in the air. The player’s contract will expire on June 30, 2022, and there is a high chance that he will become another Real Madrid captain to depart from the Santiago Bernabeu as a free agent after Sergio Ramos last year.

Recent reports have claimed that Marcelo is keen on extending his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu by penning a new contract, even if he takes home a lower salary. But for a long time, the Spanish giants have been reluctant to hand a contract extension to the 33-year-old full-back.

However, things have seemingly taken a turn for the better for Marcelo after an impressive display against Espanyol this past weekend. According to Mundo Deportivo, the Merengues are weighing up the possibility of handing the veteran Brazilian defender a contract extension.

After Real Madrid clinched the La Liga title, Marcelo insisted that he knew his worth and wanted to stay put at the Santiago Bernabeu. And with Real Madrid seriously considering extending his deal by a year, it might not be surprising to see the experienced left-back at the club till the end of the 2022/23 season.
