Luka Modric set to sign Real Madrid contract extension

Croatian midfield maestro Luka Modric is reportedly on the verge of officially signing a contract extension with Real Madrid.

According to a report by Spanish publication AS, Luka Modric has reached an agreement to sign a one-year contract extension with Real Madrid. The deal will keep the Croatian midfield maestro at the Santiago Bernabeu until the end of the 2022/23 season, with Los Blancos also reserving the option to extend his stay by twelve months.

When one looks at Luka Modric and his body of work at Real Madrid, they will find it hard to believe that he was initially branded a failure upon arriving from Tottenham Hotspur in August 2012. With the 36-year-old’s Real Madrid stint nearing the completion of a decade, he is indubitably one of their greatest ever players.

To date, the Croatian international has turned out 430 times for Real Madrid, chipping in with 31 goals and 70 assists in the process. But the turn of the year had brought with it some sense of insecurity surrounding Modric, as he had entered the final six months of his contract with Los Blancos.

While the Spanish giants have always been keen on extending Modric’s stay at the Santiago Bernabeu, the terms of the contract were holding up the agreement. For his part, the veteran midfielder was also ready to commit another year of his career to Real Madrid.

With contract renewal negotiations dragging on for longer than anticipated, high profile clubs across Europe, like Juventus, started to show an interest in prising Modric away from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window. But the two parties reached a breakthrough in talks recently.

Recent reports had claimed that Modric was on the verge of agreeing to the terms of his renewal. And the contract extension will soon become official, with AS claiming that the 36-year-old is on the brink of putting pen to paper on a contract that will run until the end of the 2022/23 season.

Real Madrid will also reserve the option to extend Modric’s stay at the Santiago Bernabeu by a further twelve months if his performance levels do not wane by much. In addition, Real Madrid will also offer Modric a role in the sporting structure, meaning he will likely end his career in Madrid. The news will leave fans relieved, especially with Modric still showing top-notch levels in his game.
