La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly stepping up their efforts to sign 27-year-old Spanish left-back Javi Galan in the summer.
According to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Javi Galan is one of the candidates on Barcelona’s radar to bolster their left-back options in the summer transfer window. The Catalan giants are in contact with the 27-year-old Celta Vigo left-back.
Javi Galan was a relative unknown outside Spain for most of his career until the 2020/21 season. That term, the Spanish left-back was the standout performer in a forgettable campaign for SD Huesca, and he earned a move to a bigger club in La Liga when he joined Celta Vigo last summer.
The 27-year-old took no time to establish himself as a pivotal figure for the Galician club and has missed only two games all season. Galan has chipped in with three assists in 34 appearances thus far this term, with his stock continuing to skyrocket. The player’s exploits have been noticed by one of the biggest clubs in La Liga, with Barcelona reportedly keen on signing him in the summer.
Barcelona will likely delve into the market for a left-back in the summer transfer window as Alejandro Balde is yet to establish a foothold in the first-team setup at Camp Nou. As a result, Jordi Alba has played throughout the season without a backup, prompting Ronald Koeman and Xavi Hernandez to seek makeshift solutions in his absence.
In addition, Alba is well into his thirties and has shown signs of age catching up with him this term. With the veteran Spanish left-back approaching the final phase of his career, Barcelona will need to sign an alternative who can provide the peak years of his career to them while facilitating the advent of Balde.
To that end, Galan has emerged as a viable target for Barcelona, with the 27-year-old being a cost-effective solution to their problems. According to Mundo Deportivo, Celta Vigo will likely demand around €15 million for the Spaniard, which should not set their fellow La Liga outfit back by much.
