Barcelona join Borussia Dortmund in Ramy Bensebaini pursuit

Barcelona have entered the race to sign Borussia Monchengladbach left-back Ramy Bensebaini, who is a target for Borussia Dortmund and Juventus.

According to German publication Sport1, Barcelona have joined Borussia Dortmund in the race to secure the transfer of Ramy Bensebaini from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer.

Bensebaini spent the early parts of his footballing career in his homeland of Algeria, playing for the JMG Algier academy before moving to Paradou AC. The left-back had loan stints at Belgian club Lierse SK and French outfit Montpellier before signing for Rennes on a permanent deal in 2016.

After three years and 98 appearances for the French club, Bensebaini made his way to the Bundesliga, signing for Borussia Monchengladbach. The 26-year-old has been a regular in the side at Borussia Park, racking up 78 appearances in which he has netted 17 goals and assisted seven more.

Bensebaini has also appeared 46 times for the Algerian national team and was part of the side that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019. The left-back is enjoying an impressive campaign for Gladbach in 2021/22, with a return of five goals and two assists in 19 matches. And it has seemingly caught the eye of several top clubs in Europe, including Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund.

Barcelona are in the market for reinforcements at left-back, where they have only Jordi Alba as the natural option currently. The veteran Spaniard has done well but needs his game-time managed as he is entering the final phase of his career. So, Barcelona are looking for a player to cover for Alba and eventually replace him as the first-choice left-back at Camp Nou.

Jose Gaya had been Barça’s priority target, but the Spaniard looks all set to sign a new contract with Valencia. The Catalans are also looking at VfB Stuttgart’s Borna Sosa as an option. And Bensebaini has also presented himself as a target as per the report.

However, Barcelona will have to face competition from Borussia Dortmund in the race for the 26-year-old. The Black and Yellows are looking for an upgrade on Nico Schulz as they seek better cover and competition for Raphael Guerreiro in the left-back slot. Bensebaini is a player they are looking at, along with Sosa, for the position.

Apart from Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund, even Juventus are also interested in Bensebaini as they look to replace Alex Sandro, who has endured a steep decline in his performance levels this term.

Bensebaini will enter the final year of his contract with Gladbach at the end of the season, meaning he could be available at a bargain in the summer. Whether Barcelona decide to step up their pursuit of the Algerian international remains to be seen.
