Tottenham Hotspur are ready to rival Manchester United in the pursuit of RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer.
According to German outlet BILD, both Tottenham and Manchester United are monitoring Austrian midfielder Konrad aimer and could make a summer move for him. Both sides need a major summer overhaul and have identified the 24-year-old as a potential signing.
Laimer is a Red Bull Salzburg youth product and joined Leipzig in a €7 million move in 2017. He didn’t take long before establishing himself at the heart of the midfield for the Bundesliga side and has been a mainstay since. He has looked assured in the Champions League as well and is thus attracting interest from European giants.
In all, Laimer has made 149 appearances for Leipzig, scoring 11 and assisting 16 times for them. Laimer has scored four and assisted three goals this season, with two goals and an assist coming last weekend against Borussia Dortmund.
The 23-year-old can play as a defensive midfielder, shielding the defence, and also in a slightly more advanced role in the centre. With age on his side and a recent upturn in form, Laimer has caught the eyes of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Laimer played under United interim manager Ralf Rangnick at Leipzig. The German tactician is said to be pushing the club to sign the midfielder. With the impending exit of Paul Pogba, Manchester United are on the lookout for a central midfielder and have been linked with the likes of Declan Rice and Aurelien Tchouameni, with Laimer emerging as the latest option.
Tottenham have been long-time admirers of the Austrian. Laimer played a crucial role in Leipzig’s 4-0 demolition of Tottenham in the Champions League Round of 16 back in 2020, and has since been on the radars of the London outfit. The club are also eager to add reinforcements this summer to climb up the Premier League table under the tutelage of Antonio Conte.
Laimer will have just a year remaining on his contract after the ongoing season. He is set to enter talks with the club over his future once the season is done and dusted. Whether Tottenham or Manchester United present him with a deal too good to turn down remains to be seen.
