Arsenal, Everton, Newcastle United lodge enquiry for Memphis Depay

Arsenal, Everton and Newcastle United have reportedly approached Barcelona regarding a potential swoop for Memphis Depay.

A recent report from Super Deportes has offered an update on the future of Memphis Depay. The Barcelona forward is facing an uncertain future at the club, having lost his prominence in the first team under Xavi. He could be heading towards the exit door in the summer, with many clubs interested in securing his services.

Premier League outfits Arsenal, Newcastle United and Everton have already launched an enquiry, exploring the possibility of a summer swoop for Depay. There is a chance Barcelona could let him leave at a discounted price, especially if the player himself opts to remain at Camp Nou.

When Depay initially joined Barcelona last summer, he was decried as the solution to the club’s offensive issues, especially after the exit of Lionel Messi. But after a promising start to the campaign, the Dutchman’s progress was halted by injuries, which coincided with Barcelona’s decision to sack Ronald Koeman as the head coach.

Under Xavi, Depay has not been able to perform consistently, with the attacker failing to start any of the last six league matches. He has fallen behind Ousmane Dembele, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ferran Torres and even Adama Traore in the pecking order. His role at Barcelona could dwindle further in light of Ansu Fati’s recent return from injury, coupled with the potential signing of Raphinha in the summer.

Arsenal view Depay’s situation as an ideal market opportunity to snap up the Dutch international, who could be a perfect replacement for Alexandre Lacazette. The Arsenal skipper is unlikely to continue at the Emirates amid interest from his former club Lyon and, quite curiously, FC Barcelona.

Another club involved in the race to sign Depay is Newcastle United. The Magpies are expected to spend the big bucks in the market this summer, and the Barcelona star, to that end, could be an ideal protagonist in the attacking unit, offering the much-needed quality in the number nine position.

Everton are the other club to lodge an enquiry for Depay. However, it is difficult to imagine a move to Goodison Park, given the Toffees are currently embroiled in a relegation battle. Unless the club are looking for a major spending spree in order to radically change the outlook of the team, it will be difficult for Frank Lampard to convince Depay as he looks to take the next step in his career this summer.
