Newcastle United set sights on Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Newcastle United are reportedly considering making a move for Everton and England striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the summer transfer window.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United have identified the No. 9 position as a key area that needs to be strengthened in the summer transfer window. The Magpies have several candidates to bolster the centre-forward department, with Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin one among them.

Calvert-Lewin joined Everton from Sheffield United in 2016 and has, over the years, steadily grown into a vital part of the first-team setup at Goodison Park. The 25-year-old has made 184 appearances for the Toffees, chalking up a return of 56 goals and 17 assists. He enjoyed his best campaign to date in 2020/21, finishing with 21 goals from 39 matches in all competitions.

However, Calvert-Lewin has failed to hit the same heights this term. Injuries have hampered the Englishman while he has not been helped by a team that is in disarray. As a result, the England international has just three goals to show for, from 11 matches in the ongoing season.

With Everton facing the prospect of relegation and their financial situation not being all too healthy, they could be forced to sell Calvert-Lewin in the summer. And, despite the striker’s poor form and fitness problems this term, he is attracting significant interest from clubs in the Premier League, with Newcastle emerging as the striker’s latest suitors.

Newcastle are prepping themselves for a huge summer after all but sealing their safety in the Premier League. While they bolstered their attacking unit in January with the signing of Chris Wood, Eddie Howe remains keen on adding another top striker to his ranks before the next campaign kicks off.

Such a move makes sense, considering that Callum Wilson is a liability due to his poor fitness record, while Wood has not exactly set the stage alight since his transfer in January. So, a new centre-forward would be a welcome addition at St James’ Park in the summer, with Real Sociedad’s Alexander Isak emerging as an option.

But considering the intense competition for the Swede, who also has a €90 million release clause, Newcastle could be better off looking at someone like Calvert-Lewin. The 25-year-old has proven himself in the Premier League and is well-acquainted with the rough and tumble of English football.

Calvert-Lewin has also exhibited top-notch goalscoring instincts over the past couple of years and can help Newcastle take the next step towards achieving their lofty ambitions under their new owners. However, he has a contract with Everton that runs until 2025, which means that the Magpies may have to shell out a big sum to sign the England international.
