Erik ten Hag reportedly wants Manchester United to sign Ajax superstar Antony if he gets appointed as the head coach ahead of the 2022/23 season.
According to a report from Daily Telegraph, Manchester United have intensified their search for a new manager as they brace themselves for life without Ralf Rangnick, who is set to take up a consultancy role from next season. Erik ten Hag is currently leading the race to become his successor at Old Trafford next season, ahead of Mauricio Pochettino.
Ten Hag had formally held talks with Manchester United last week, and it is believed that the Dutchman could eye a move for Antony next season if he gets appointed as the head coach at Old Trafford.
Formerly of Sao Paulo, Antony has become a rising star at Ajax since joining the club in 2020. He was notably involved in 17 league goals during his maiden season in the Eredivisie, and this time around, the Brazilian international has only improved on his numbers, starring not only in the domestic competition but also in the UEFA Champions League.
Indeed, the winger’s four goals and two assists were key in helping Ajax top Group C and reach the knockout stages. The explosive forward notably starred against Borussia Dortmund, taking the opposing defence to the cleans with his exceptional pace and trickery on the flanks.
Antony’s performances have not gone unnoticed either, with Barcelona among the clubs pushing to sign the Brazilian international with the help of veteran Dani Alves. But Manchester United could emerge as the front-runners in the race to sign the Ajax starlet, thanks to Erik ten Hag, who has a strong rapport with the player and might be able to convince him to move to Old Trafford.
From a sporting perspective, Antony’s pace and trickery on the flanks could help Manchester United fill up the void left by Mason Greenwood. He could also become a potential replacement for Marcus Rashford, who is reportedly unsettled at the club and could leave in the summer amid interest from Liverpool and Barcelona.
Even Anthony Martial may leave the club, with Borussia Dortmund among the clubs interested in acquiring his services next season. Antony, to that end, could help Manchester United fill up the holes and strengthen their creative department led by Bruno Fernandes.
