Bruno Fernandes agrees to sign new five-year deal with Manchester United

Bruno Fernandes has reportedly agreed to sign a new five-year deal with Manchester United.

As per football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Bruno Fernandes agreed to the terms over a new contract offered by Manchester United. The new deal will see him stay at the club until 2027, adding two years to the initial contract he signed with the Red Devils upon arrival from Sporting CP.

The 27-year-old has been a hit at Old Trafford since his arrival in January 2020 from Sporting. He has actively contributed with goals and assists and has been the most important player for the Manchester-based outfit since his arrival by quite some distance.

Fernandes moved to Manchester in a €55 million move from Sporting following two-and-a-half incredible seasons with the Portuguese side. He scored 11 goals in the 2017/18 season along with ten assists and followed it up with a 20-league goals season.

He had already scored eight and assisted seven when Manchester United came calling midway through the 2019/20 season. Fernandes maintained his momentum, settling down nicely at Old Trafford.

He quickly became one of the first names on the teamsheet, often leading teams to results single-handedly. He scored 12 goals and made nine assists in six months of the 2019/20 season with United in just 22 appearances, a goal contribution rate of almost one per match.

The Portuguese led from the front as United finished second in the 2020/21 Premier League season, scoring 18 goals, the third-most in the league. He also provided 12 assists to finish as the second-highest assist-maker of the league season.

Fernandes hasn’t been great by his standards this season, but has still scored nine and made six assists in the league. The playmaker’s consistency has convinced Manchester United to tie him down to a longer contract. He was recently linked with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City, which might have forced the Red Devils’ to sort out the details of an extension sooner rather than later.

The 27-year-old reportedly earns £180,000 per week in wages and could receive a significant raise with the new deal. The two parties have been in talks over a new contract since last July and discussions seem to be coming to fruition now. An announcement can be expected soon.
