Manchester United ponder offloading Harry Maguire

Manchester United could reportedly let go of club captain Harry Maguire in the summer transfer window.

According to Fichajes, Harry Maguire is one of five players that Manchester United are prepared to sell in the summer. The Red Devils need a major overhaul, but they will also have to offload first-team players to incorporate new signings. Some of the senior players have failed to live up to the expectations and could be on their way out of Old Trafford in the summer.

This season, Maguire has come under intense scrutiny, often being singled out for the club’s on-field struggles. He has helped Manchester United keep just six clean sheets in his 24 Premier League appearances, while several errors have also led to United conceding goals. Fans and pundits have been quite vocal about the Manchester United captain’s recent performances, calling for the club to strip him off captaincy and sell him in the summer.

Since his £80 million move from Leicester City in 2019, Maguire has made 138 appearances for the Red Devils. He was appointed as the Manchester United captain in January 2020 by then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following a string of solid performances at the heart of their defence.

His recent form, however, has left a lot to be desired. Maguire’s England selection has not been affected due to his Manchester United form as Gareth Southgate again selected him for the upcoming friendlies.

Manchester United have also been linked with the likes of Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger and Borussia Dortmund’s Manuel Akanji for possible summer moves, which has further fuelled rumours of a possible exit for Maguire. The Englishman possibly has four months left to save his Manchester United career if these reports are to be believed.

The four other players that Manchester United are preparing to offload as per the aforementioned report are David de Gea, Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani. These are five of the biggest players at the club, and it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils part ways with all of them or not.
