Marcelo Brozovic turns down chance to join Real Madrid

La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid have reportedly been handed a major blow in pursuit of Marcelo Brovozic, who is set to stay put at Inter Milan.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Marcelo Brozovic is set to stay put at Inter Milan beyond the summer transfer window. In doing so, the 29-year-old midfielder will have turned down a lucrative offer from Real Madrid, as he is committed to the Serie A giants.

Marcelo Brozovic has transformed into one of the most dominant midfielders in Serie A since joining Inter Milan from Dinamo Zagreb over half a dozen years ago. After steadily growing in stature within the Italian club’s first-team setup, the Croatian international played a key role in their ascent to the top of Serie A, culminating with the title triumph last season.

To date, the 29-year-old has turned out 279 times for the Nerazzurri, chipping in with 26 goals and 35 assists in the process. But the Serie A champions have long been scrambling to tie Brozovic down to a bumper new contract, as he is currently in the final six months of his contract. Such a situation has captured the attention of Real Madrid.

The interest from Real Madrid primarily stems from the lack of cover for Casemiro, the only natural holding midfielder for Los Blancos. And while Brozovic will ideally be a viable alternative for the Brazilian international, his ability to play as a box-to-box midfielder also makes him a handy option for Carlo Ancelotti.

With Dani Ceballos and Isco likely to depart the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer transfer window, bolstering the midfield is necessary for Real Madrid. Brozovic is thus an option worth considering for the Merengues, who even put a lucrative contract offer on the table for the 29-year-old.

But Brozovic has turned down the chance to join Real Madrid on a Bosman move in the summer transfer window. Instead, the Croatian midfielder will stay put at Inter Milan after pledging his future to the Serie A giants.

The 29-year-old will soon sign a new four-year contract with Inter Milan, thus putting an end to the widespread speculation surrounding him. As for Real Madrid, the Spanish giants now have to set their sights on alternate options, with Youri Tielemans among the midfielders on their radar.
