Arsenal, Newcastle United vying for William Carvalho

Arsenal and Newcastle United are reportedly among the clubs interested in securing the services of Real Betis midfielder William Carvalho.

According to Fichajes, William Carvalho could be on the verge of a move away from Real Betis in the summer. The 29-year-old Portuguese international was close to leaving the club at the start of the season, but he ended up remaining in Spain. The move has paid off as he has become a crucial member of the club’s midfield department this season.

However, Real Betis are open to the idea of offloading Carvalho in the summer as they look for a financial injection. The midfielder’s situation has alerted Premier League giants Arsenal. They are considering making an offer to sign the former Sporting CP star next season, while their league rivals Newcastle United are involved in the chase as well.

There is no secret that the Magpies are keen on further upgrading the overall quality of their squad in the coming summer. Newcastle United had notably splashed over €100 million in January, luring in talents such as Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier.

Eddie Howe, to that end, will look to add more depth in the midfield unit, especially with Isaac Hayden becoming an fringe players due to injuries and lack of form. Sean Longstaff is expected to leave the club as well amid interest from West Bromwich Albion.

Arsenal, on the other hand, are lacking depth in midfield altogether. After failing to sign a major player in January, Mikel Arteta has been left with only two quality options in the middle of the park. And a potential injury to either Granit Xhaka or Thomas Partey could derail their quest to finish inside the top four.

William Carvalho, to that end, could be an ideal option for both these Premier League clubs. With close to 100 appearances in La Liga and a total of 69 caps for the Portuguese national team, the 29-year-old midfielder has vast experience at the highest level of football.

His defensive astuteness, coupled with his physical and aerial prowess, are also ideally suited to the Premier League’s brand of play. However, what makes Carvalho such an appealing target is his Real Betis contract that expires at the end of the next season. It could thus be a real market opportunity for Arsenal and Newcastle as they look to snap up the midfielder on a cut-price deal come summer.
