Napoli have reportedly joined AS Roma in pursuit of Barcelona defender Sergino Dest ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.
According to Calciomercato, Napoli have entered the race to sign Barcelona right-back Sergino Dest, who also happens to be a summer transfer target for their Serie A rivals, AS Roma.
Sergino Dest is staring at an uncertain future at Barcelona despite having signed for the club less than two years ago. Having arrived from Ajax in 2020, the 21-year-old has failed to nail down a spot in the right-back slot. And, with Barcelona pushing to sign Noussair Mazraoui on a free transfer this summer, the USMNT international stands to go down a notch in the pecking order.
Indeed, with Dest already being behind Dani Alves in the order of preference, Mazraoui’s arrival would eat into his game-time further, leading to speculation over his future at Camp Nou. And the 21-year-old defender is attracting a lot of interest from clubs across Europe, with Bayern Munich keen on landing the Barcelona defender, along with AS Roma. Now, Napoli, too, have entered the fray for his signing.
Napoli currently have Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Kevin Malcuit as their options on the right side of the defence. However, Malcuit is out of contract at the end of the season, which would leave the Partenopei light in numbers in the right-back slot.
This situation has forced Napoli to look at options to bolster their ranks, with Dest emerging as a transfer target for Luciano Spalletti’s side. However, they will have to stave off competition from Serie A rivals AS Roma, who are also keen on landing the Barcelona defender at the end of the ongoing season.
Like Napoli, Roma are also short-handed in the right-back department, with Rick Karsdorp the only reliable option at manager Jose Mourinho’s disposal. As a result, the Giallorossi are scouring the market for reinforcements in the position, with Barcelona ace Sergino Dest emerging as a target. Recent reports also indicated the 21-year-old himself was considering a move to Stadio Olimpico.
With interest in the former Ajax defender growing, Barcelona should not have difficulty finding a suitor for him in the summer transfer window. What remains to be seen is whether Dest decides to join Roma or Napoli or some other club altogether.
